Fires in Australia will have burned 14 times the area devastated in California’s 2018 wildfires. Many First Nation elders and Aborigine Australians native to the land have warned local authorities for years that mass wildfires in the bush were imminent. The Aboriginal elders also offered a solution: cultural burning. Methods of culture burning include the use of controlled fires during cooler months to enhance biodiversity. Their methods are based on science and tribal knowledge. Still, local authorities have forbid elders from the practice. Local governments from California to Australia implement their own version of controlled burning. These burnings are more concerned with protecting property and assets than replenishing the environment. As the affects of climate change becomes more obvious, so too does the fact that those in power’s only connection to the land under their jurisdiction is a superficial one.
