When The Police Came to My House

When The Police Came to My House
By Kayla Humphreys

One day in the summer, my oldest brother, my cousins, my mom, and I were hanging outside of my mom’s house. While we were hanging out, outside of my mom’s house we had seen and heard the police was looking for two black men that was wearing white T-shirts. My brother Da’von was wearing a white T-shirt and he had ran somewhere to get something and when he had ran back to the house these two white police had came running to our house with their guns in my brother face. Saying, “Put your hands up and don’t move!” When that had happened I was scared for my brother because I thought they were going to shoot him. My mom was upstairs in the house and she heard someone yelling, so she went on the balcony to see what it was. When my mom saw what was going on she went off saying, “What the #BLEEP you doing?” She was talking to the police. One of the policemen said, “This man is being arrested.” My mom was yelling saying, “He didn’t do nothing.” She was yelling out saying, “I’m finna come down there.” And the policemen said, “If you come down here we will shoot.”
When all that was happening my other oldest brother Kianta, came running from around the corner where we had just got off work. But when he came home the two policemen then began to point their guns at him, because they thought he was a suspect. The two policemen then started yelling at him saying, “Get down and don’t move” I don’t know why they arrested him I thought maybe because he is Black. When all that was happening my mom, my cousins, and I were all yelling at the police because they was arresting brothers for nothing. My mom had came back outside and started yelling again at the police saying, “They didn’t do nothing why are you arresting them.”
The two policemen had put handcuffs on both of my brothers and then told them to get up slowly, the police had taken them to the police cars, my mom had went as well. When the two policemen was walking them to car it was a bunch of people just staring and whispering about what was going on. My two brothers and my mom went to the two police to talk about what happened and that they got the wrong people. She told the two policemen that these two young men are her sons and that they wouldn’t do anything to get in so much trouble and the two policemen had told my mom that they were sorry and that they got the wrong person.
Finally, the two policemen believed what my mom was telling them and they took the handcuffs off my brothers and let them free. My mom and my two brothers had came back into the house and my mom was really mad, because she was just shocked that the police would even arrest her two sons that she loved dearly and was almost taken to jail over a mistake. My brother Da’von came in the house and didn’t want to talk to anybody and my other brother Kianta came in the house fine, he was just happy that they didn’t go to jail and didn’t get shot by the police.
